The Institute is designing and implementing permaculture principles and techniques on a ten acre piece of land in the Slocan Valley situated in the West Kootenay in British Columbia, Canada. It is an ideal site for people to come to learn and practice Permaculture. The Institute keeps in touch with both the local and the international network of people working with various approaches to sustainable & ecological living.

Permaculture
The minute Robin Wheeler heard the term Permaculture, she realized she had found the niche she had been looking for. Breeding plants for Permaculture gardens offered her a practical application for her happy urge to propagate any vegetation she could get her hands on.

Robin is settled on her new property on the Sunshine Coast, clearing bush, running her nursery and planting new display areas.

Robin also writes about farming, sustainability and food growing. She is author of Gardening for the Faint of Heart, (Raincoast Books) and writes a gardening column for Momentum magazine. She is an early member of Canadian Organic Growers and Seeds of Diversity.

The Heart Gardens are a community permaculture demonstration site in Roberts Creek, British Columbia. They are a living classroom environment designed to teach about nature and ecology, encouraging people to have active relationships with plants and the planet. This web platform can stand alone, or compliment a printed map which may be used to do self guided tours of the Heart Gardens while identifying the plants within them and learning a bit about their functions. Created to illustrate permaculture principles and organic gardening, including a biodynamic compost site and rainbarrel system, the heart gardens hosts a plant community of over 200 species with a special focus on native plants with a history of use by Coastal First Peoples. The heart gardens teach about the land itself and the culture of the land.

We are gearing up for the third annual gathering, January 11th-13th 2008! We will be meeting to inspire each other once again at Linnaea Farm on beautiful Cortes Island. Logistics will be similar to previous years; we will stay in the Farmhouse, and delicious meals will be lovingly prepared by Tamara.

We are going to experiment with a sliding scale cost this year, $60-$75. Tamara has also indicated that she is happy to accept assistance in meal prep. and cleanup for a reduction in cost. Please extend this invitation to all those who you think will be interested!

Kiera has kindly posted all of our presentations from last year at: http://bcpermaculture.wikispaces.com/LinnaeaMeet-up , so check it out!

Please let me know if you will be attending! I look forward to seeing you all there
again this year!

Linnaea Farm is a beautiful land trust on Cortes Island, B.C. Situated on the edge of Gunflint Lake, it comprises 315 acres of rich forests, fields, gardens, and orchards.
